Step by step

  1. Start with Text Cleaner

Paste your text into Text Cleaner. Its default settings trim lines, collapse repeated spaces, reduce runs of empty lines and remove invisible characters such as zero-width spaces.

  2. Straighten quotes if needed

Turn on “Straighten smart quotes” if the text is going into code, a spreadsheet or a CMS that doesn’t like curly quotes.

  3. Strip HTML if you copied page source

Turn on “Strip HTML tags” to remove markup and keep only the words.

  4. Fix broken lines

If sentences are split across lines (common with PDFs), run the result through Remove Line Breaks with “Keep paragraphs” on, or Text Formatter with “Join broken lines”.

  5. Check and save

Compare the result with your original, then copy it or download it as TXT, Word or PDF.

Why copied text gets messy

PDFs store text as positioned fragments, so copying them produces a line break at the end of every visual line. Web pages and emails add non-breaking spaces, zero-width characters and typographic quotes that look normal but behave differently in other apps.

Cleaning lists

For lists rather than prose, use List Cleaner instead. In one step it trims every item, removes empty lines, removes duplicates and can sort and normalize case.

Repeat the same cleanup

If you clean the same kind of text regularly, Chain Tools lets you line up several steps — for example Text Cleaner, then Remove Duplicate Lines, then Sort A → Z — and run them in one click.

Frequently asked questions

What are invisible characters?

Characters such as zero-width spaces, byte-order marks and control characters. They take up no space on screen but can break searches, comparisons and imports.

Will cleaning change my words?

No. The cleaners change spacing, line breaks and the characters you choose to remove — not the words themselves.
