How words and characters are counted

Words are groups of characters separated by spaces that contain at least one letter or number, so “e-mail” and “me@example.com” are one word each. Characters are counted as you see them: an emoji with a skin tone counts as one. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute; speaking time assumes 150.
